Leading Tuition's GCSE Chemistry tutors in Watford are expert one-to-one online teachers who prepare pupils for the separate GCSE (9-1) in Chemistry. DfE's provisional summer 2026 table counts 364 Chemistry entries at the 5 schools of Watford district, from a combined cohort of 898 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4, and 166 of them are at Watford Grammar School for Boys.

Watford here means the GIAS district of Watford, which sits inside Hertfordshire (DfE local authority 919). DfE's Hertfordshire table lists 92 schools with GCSE (9-1) Chemistry rows, and 5 of them are in Watford district. Every figure below belongs to those 5 schools, never to the county.

Our expert GCSE Chemistry tutors help pupils across Watford at Foundation and Higher Tier, building each one-to-one online programme around the pupil's own school, exam board and latest mock paper.

Which 5 schools are in the Watford Chemistry rows, and what does a row count?

The rows are DfE's GCSE (9-1) Full Course entries in Chemistry, the separate qualification. Pupils who take Combined Science (Double Award) are counted in different qualification rows, so a school's Chemistry entries are a count of its separate Chemistry entries and not of its whole year group. DfE also publishes the number of pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 for each school, and the table sets the two side by side.

Watford Grammar School for Boys has 166 Chemistry entries against a cohort of 224, and Watford Grammar School for Girls has 132 against 211. Future Academies Watford has 40 against 195 and Westfield Academy has 21 against 243. Stanborough Secondary School, which GIAS lists as an other independent school, has 5 against 25. The two Watford Grammar schools therefore account for 298 of the district's 364 entries.

A school can have many pupils and few Chemistry entries, or the reverse, and the same cohort figure sits beside very different entry counts in this table: 243 pupils at Westfield Academy and 224 at Watford Grammar School for Boys, with 21 and 166 entries. The tutor works from the child's own school, so the first thing to read is that school's own entries and cohort figures.

School membership of the district comes from the GIAS register file edubasealldata20261102, field DistrictAdministrative, read on 2 November 2026. The grade counts come from the DfE key stage 4 school-level subject dataset, version 2.0, read on 2 November 2026 through DfE's public data API. DfE's 2025/26 key stage 4 release was published on 15 October 2026 and last updated on 28 October 2026, and it is provisional.

DfE's Hertfordshire table also lists a school named Stanborough School. GIAS records it with the town Welwyn Garden City and the district Welwyn Hatfield, so it is a different school from Stanborough Secondary School and is in none of the Watford tables on this page.

How are Chemistry entries spread across grades 3 to 9 at each Watford school?

DfE counts entries at each grade from 1 to 9, with U and X in separate columns. At the four Watford district schools whose grade rows DfE returns, every entry sits at grade 3 or above, and the counts below reconcile exactly to each school's total. A zero is a real zero: grades 1 to 9, U and X add up to DfE's entry total at all four.

Watford Grammar School for Boys: 166 entries from a cohort of 224. The counts are 3 at grade 4, 24 at grade 5, 27 at grade 6, 29 at grade 7, 44 at grade 8 and 39 at grade 9.

Watford Grammar School for Girls: 132 entries from a cohort of 211. The counts are 1 at grade 3, 7 at grade 4, 12 at grade 5, 27 at grade 6, 27 at grade 7, 31 at grade 8 and 27 at grade 9.

Future Academies Watford: 40 entries from a cohort of 195. The counts are 2 at grade 4, 10 at grade 5, 15 at grade 6, 7 at grade 7 and 6 at grade 8.

Westfield Academy: 21 entries from a cohort of 243. The counts are 3 at grade 4, 3 at grade 6, 5 at grade 7, 7 at grade 8 and 3 at grade 9.

Stanborough Secondary School has 5 Chemistry entries from a cohort of 25. It is listed in the entry table above and left out of the grade tables, which cover the four schools whose grade rows DfE returns.

How many entries are at grade 4 and above, grade 7 and above and grade 9?

The three hurdles in the next table are read off DfE's grade rows and added by this page: grade 4 and above is the sum of the grade 4 to 9 counts, grade 7 and above is the sum of the grade 7 to 9 counts, and the entries below grade 4 are the grade 3 counts. These sums are our own arithmetic on DfE's counts, not figures DfE publishes, and each sits beside the school's entry total.

Four schools together359358225691

Across the four schools, 358 of 359 entries are at grade 4 or above, 225 at grade 7 or above and 69 at grade 9. At Watford Grammar School for Boys the grade 7 and above count is 112 of 166, and at Watford Grammar School for Girls it is 85 of 132. At Future Academies Watford it is 13 of 40 and at Westfield Academy 15 of 21.

Those four counts come from entry totals of 166, 132, 40 and 21, so a pooled figure is dominated by the largest school and is not any one school's own. A pupil's mock paper and the paper-by-paper marks say more about the next step than a district total can.

DfE states that it is not possible to calculate Progress 8 for academic years 2024/25 and 2025/26, because there is no KS2 prior attainment data to use. Nothing in these counts measures how much a school added to a pupil's grade, and the counts are entries, not pupils.

Pupils at every Watford school can work one-to-one online with an expert GCSE Chemistry tutor on the paper topics where their own marks are lowest, at Foundation or Higher Tier.

Which Watford-postal schools does GIAS place in Three Rivers?

GIAS gives Watford as the town for Parmiter's School and Saint Michael's Catholic High School, and gives Three Rivers as their district. They are therefore outside the Watford district cut and outside every Watford total above. They sit in the same DfE Hertfordshire table, so their separate Chemistry counts are shown here in a table of their own.

Parmiter's School has 89 Chemistry entries against a cohort of 206, with 89 at grade 4 or above and 79 at grade 7 or above. Its counts are 10 at grade 6, 7 at grade 7, 26 at grade 8 and 46 at grade 9. Saint Michael's Catholic High School has 31 against 180, with 30 at grade 4 or above and 17 at grade 7 or above. Its counts are 1 at grade 3, 2 at grade 4, 6 at grade 5, 5 at grade 6, 8 at grade 7, 5 at grade 8 and 4 at grade 9. The 89 and 31 entry totals are not added to the Watford district's 364.

What do the two AQA Chemistry papers ask?

AQA is one of the exam boards that publishes a GCSE Chemistry specification, and its specification 8462 is the one read here. AQA's specification page sets out 10 topics. Paper 1 assesses topics 1 to 5: Atomic structure and the periodic table; Bonding, structure, and the properties of matter; Quantitative chemistry; Chemical changes; and Energy changes. Paper 2 assesses topics 6 to 10: The rate and extent of chemical change; Organic chemistry; Chemical analysis; Chemistry of the atmosphere; and Using resources.

Each paper is a written exam of 1 hour 45 minutes, set at Foundation and Higher Tier, worth 100 marks and 50% of the GCSE. Questions are multiple choice, structured, closed short answer and open response. AQA states that questions in Paper 2 may draw on fundamental concepts and principles from sections 4.1 to 4.3, so the first three topics are examined directly in Paper 1 and can return in Paper 2.

How many minutes does an AQA Chemistry paper give for each mark?

Each paper is 100 marks in 1 hour 45 minutes, which is 105 minutes, so a pupil has about 1.05 minutes for every mark. Across the two papers that is 200 marks and 210 minutes of writing. Our tutors time past-paper questions inside the session, so a pupil learns what 1.05 minutes a mark feels like at the desk before the exam hall asks for it.

The papers split the specification into 5 topics and 5, each carrying 50% of the GCSE. A pupil whose diagnostic shows marks lost on Paper 1 topics such as Quantitative chemistry, or on Paper 2 topics such as Organic chemistry, starts there, and the programme is sequenced from the pupil's own marks rather than from the order of the specification. Foundation and Higher Tier sit on the same two papers, so the same two papers are the starting point whichever tier a pupil sits.

Pupils sitting AQA Chemistry can book one-to-one online tuition with an expert GCSE Chemistry tutor who times Paper 1 and Paper 2 questions at 1.05 minutes a mark, for any Watford school.

What are the 8 required practicals, and which two are Chemistry only?

AQA lists 8 required practical activities for GCSE Chemistry. Its specification states that practicals 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 are common with GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy and GCSE Combined Science: Synergy, and that practicals 2 and 7 are GCSE Chemistry only. AQA also states that questions drawing on the practical activities count for at least 15% of the overall marks for the qualification, and that a minimum of eight experiments are required for single science qualifications and 16 for double science qualifications.

PracticalAQA required activityQualification
1Preparation of a pure, dry sample of a soluble salt from an insoluble oxide or carbonateShared with Combined Science
2Reacting volumes of a strong acid and a strong alkali by titrationGCSE Chemistry only
3Electrolysis of aqueous solutions using inert electrodesShared with Combined Science
4Variables that affect temperature changes in reacting solutionsShared with Combined Science
5How concentration changes the rate of a reaction, by gas volume and by colour or turbidityShared with Combined Science
6Paper chromatography to separate coloured substances, calculating Rf valuesShared with Combined Science
7Chemical tests to identify the ions in unknown single ionic compoundsGCSE Chemistry only
8Analysis and purification of water samples, including pH, dissolved solids and distillationShared with Combined Science

That is the practical difference between the separate Chemistry entries counted on this page and Combined Science. The titration in practical 2 and the ion tests in practical 7 appear only on the separate Chemistry course, and AQA adds that on the titration the concentration calculation in mol/dm3 and g/dm3 is Higher Tier only.

How do one-to-one online GCSE Chemistry sessions work for a Watford pupil?

Tuition is one-to-one and online with a shared whiteboard. A programme begins with a short diagnostic against the pupil's own school and exam board, then works through that pupil's past papers and marks them against the real mark scheme. With 2 papers, 10 topics and 8 practicals to cover, the order follows the diagnostic, not the textbook. Progress is reviewed against the pupil's own target grade at agreed intervals, and session notes go to parents after each lesson.

Our expert tutors teach the calculation-heavy topics, quantitative chemistry and the mole, with worked examples that the pupil then repeats unaided, and they teach the practical-based questions by walking through each of the 8 required practicals as a method the pupil must be able to describe and evaluate. One-to-one sessions follow the pupil's own pace, and the first table above is where the programme starts for a pupil at any of the five schools.

Our expert GCSE Chemistry tutors teach one-to-one online, working through the ten AQA topics in the order a pupil's own mock paper shows they need, for pupils at any Watford school.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GCSE Chemistry the same as Combined Science in Watford's DfE figures?

No. The Watford rows count GCSE (9-1) Full Course entries in Chemistry, the separate qualification, and the 5 Watford district schools made 364 of them in summer 2026. Combined Science (Double Award) is a different qualification with its own rows. AQA's specification states that practicals 2 and 7 of its 8 required practicals are GCSE Chemistry only.

How many GCSE Chemistry entries does each Watford district school have?

In summer 2026 DfE counts 166 at Watford Grammar School for Boys from a cohort of 224, 132 at Watford Grammar School for Girls from 211, 40 at Future Academies Watford from 195, 21 at Westfield Academy from 243 and 5 at Stanborough Secondary School from 25. Together that is 364 entries from 898 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4, and the figures are provisional.

How many Watford GCSE Chemistry entries reached grade 4 and grade 7 in 2026?

At the four Watford district schools with grade rows, DfE records 358 of 359 Chemistry entries at grade 4 or above and 225 at grade 7 or above, with 69 at grade 9, by our own sums. By school, grade 7 or above is 112 at Watford Grammar School for Boys, 85 at Watford Grammar School for Girls, 15 at Westfield Academy and 13 at Future Academies Watford.

Why are Parmiter's School and Saint Michael's Catholic High School not in the Watford totals?

GIAS lists the town of both schools as Watford and their district as Three Rivers, so they fall outside the Watford district cut of 5 schools. DfE's Hertfordshire table still lists them: Parmiter's School has 89 Chemistry entries from a cohort of 206, and Saint Michael's Catholic High School has 31 from 180. Their counts appear in a separate table.

Which Stanborough school is in the Watford Chemistry figures?

Stanborough Secondary School, which GIAS places in the district of Watford with the postcode WD25 9JT, has 5 Chemistry entries from a cohort of 25. DfE's Hertfordshire table also lists Stanborough School, which GIAS places in Welwyn Hatfield, so that school is not in any Watford table.

Are the summer 2026 GCSE Chemistry figures for Watford final?

No. DfE published the key stage 4 release on 15 October 2026, updated it on 28 October 2026 and labels it provisional: approved result amendments that schools requested have not been applied. Counts for a school can therefore differ in a later version. DfE also states that Progress 8 cannot be calculated for 2024/25 and 2025/26, so no progress measure sits beside these counts.

How long are the AQA GCSE Chemistry papers and what do they cover?

AQA 8462 has two written papers, each 1 hour 45 minutes, 100 marks and 50% of the GCSE, at Foundation and Higher Tier. Paper 1 covers topics 1 to 5, from Atomic structure and the periodic table to Energy changes. Paper 2 covers topics 6 to 10, from The rate and extent of chemical change to Using resources. Questions on the practical activities count for at least 15% of the overall marks.

How does a Watford pupil start GCSE Chemistry tuition with Leading Tuition?

A family books a free consultation through the button on this page or by WhatsApp. The first step is a short diagnostic against the pupil's own school and exam board. Sessions then run one-to-one online with a shared whiteboard, working through the pupil's own past papers and marking against the real mark scheme, with session notes sent to parents after each lesson.
