Which 5 Watford schools are in DfE's separate GCSE Physics rows, and how many entries sit beside each cohort?

The rows are DfE's GCSE (9-1) Full Course entries in Physics, the separate qualification. Pupils who take Combined Science (Double Award) are counted in different qualification rows, so a school's Physics entries are a count of its separate Physics entries and not of its whole year group. DfE also publishes the number of pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 for each school, and the table below sets the two side by side as counts only.

Watford Grammar School for Boys has 166 Physics entries against a cohort of 224, and Watford Grammar School for Girls has 132 against 211. Future Academies Watford has 40 against 195 and Westfield Academy has 21 against 243. Stanborough Secondary School, which GIAS lists as an other independent school, has 5 against 25. The two Watford Grammar schools have a combined cohort of 435 pupils out of the district's 898.

The same size of cohort sits beside very different entry counts in this table: 243 pupils at Westfield Academy and 224 at Watford Grammar School for Boys, with 21 and 166 Physics entries. At Westfield Academy the cohort is 222 pupils larger than its Physics entry count. The tutor works from the child's own school, so the first thing to read is that school's own entries and cohort.

School membership of the district comes from the GIAS register file edubasealldata20261103, field DistrictAdministrative, read on 3 November 2026. The counts come from the DfE key stage 4 school-level subject dataset, version 2.0, read on 3 November 2026 through DfE's public data API. DfE's 2025/26 key stage 4 release was published on 15 October 2026 and last updated on 28 October 2026, and DfE states that the data in it is provisional.

DfE's Hertfordshire table also lists a school named Stanborough School. GIAS records it with the town Welwyn Garden City and the district Welwyn Hatfield, so it is a different school from Stanborough Secondary School and is in none of the Watford tables on this page.

Whichever of these five schools a pupil attends, our expert GCSE Physics tutors teach one-to-one online and start from that pupil's own school, exam board and latest mock paper.

How do Physics entries spread across grades 3 to 9 at each Watford school, and how many sit at grade 6 and above?

DfE counts entries at each grade from 1 to 9, with U and X in separate columns. At the four Watford district schools whose grade rows DfE returns, the lowest grade with an entry is grade 3, and the counts below reconcile exactly to each school's total once the one X entry at Watford Grammar School for Girls is included. A blank is a real zero: grades 1 to 9, U and X add up to DfE's entry total at all four. For Stanborough Secondary School the rows returned hold the entry total of 5 and no grade rows.

Watford Grammar School for Boys: 166 entries from a cohort of 224. The counts are 2 at grade 4, 14 at grade 5, 29 at grade 6, 39 at grade 7, 41 at grade 8 and 41 at grade 9.

Watford Grammar School for Girls: 132 entries from a cohort of 211. The counts are 2 at grade 4, 11 at grade 5, 21 at grade 6, 21 at grade 7, 39 at grade 8 and 37 at grade 9. DfE also records 1 X entry.

Future Academies Watford: 40 entries from a cohort of 195. The counts are 3 at grade 4, 11 at grade 5, 12 at grade 6, 9 at grade 7, 2 at grade 8 and 3 at grade 9.

Westfield Academy: 21 entries from a cohort of 243. The counts are 1 at grade 3, 2 at grade 4, 1 at grade 5, 6 at grade 6, 6 at grade 7, 3 at grade 8 and 2 at grade 9.

AQA's own GCSE Physics 8463 specification sets Foundation Tier grades at 1 to 5 and Higher Tier grades at 4 to 9, with an allowed grade 3 for a Higher Tier pupil who just misses grade 4. The next table adds DfE's grade rows by hand: grade 4 and above is the sum of the grade 4 to 9 counts, grade 6 and above the sum of the grade 6 to 9 counts, grade 7 and above the sum of the grade 7 to 9 counts, and the last column is the entries below grade 4 or ungraded, which includes grade 3, U and X. These sums are our own arithmetic on DfE's counts, not figures DfE publishes, and each sits beside the school's entry total.

Across the four schools, 357 of 359 entries are at grade 4 or above, 311 at grade 6 or above, 243 at grade 7 or above and 83 at grade 9. At Watford Grammar School for Boys the grade 7 and above count is 121 of 166, and at Watford Grammar School for Girls it is 97 of 132. At Future Academies Watford it is 14 of 40 and at Westfield Academy 11 of 21. The grade 8 and above counts are 82, 76, 5 and 5 in the same order, 168 in all, and the grade 9 counts are 41, 37, 3 and 2. Entries at grades 3 to 5 number 16 at Watford Grammar School for Boys, 13 at Watford Grammar School for Girls, 14 at Future Academies Watford and 4 at Westfield Academy, 47 in all, so at Future Academies Watford 14 of its 40 entries sit at grades 3 to 5 and 26 at grade 6 or above. The one entry below grade 4 at Westfield Academy is at grade 3, and the one at Watford Grammar School for Girls is an X.

Those counts come from entry totals of 166, 132, 40 and 21, so a pooled figure is dominated by the largest schools and is not any one school's own. A pupil's mock paper and the paper-by-paper marks say more about the next step than a district total can.

DfE states that it is not possible to calculate Progress 8 for academic years 2024/25 and 2025/26. Nothing in these counts measures how much a school added to a pupil's grade, and the counts are entries, not pupils.

Pupils at every Watford school can work one-to-one online with an expert GCSE Physics tutor on the paper topics where their own marks are lowest, at Foundation or Higher Tier.

What do the two AQA 8463 Physics papers and ten required practicals ask of a Watford pupil?

This section describes AQA's own GCSE Physics 8463 specification, read from AQA's specification PDF, and says nothing about which exam board any Watford school enters pupils for. AQA's GCSE Physics 8463 specification page lists two written papers. Paper 1 assesses topics 1 to 4: Energy; Electricity; Particle model of matter; and Atomic structure. Paper 2 assesses topics 5 to 8: Forces; Waves; Magnetism and electromagnetism; and Space physics. Each paper is 1 hour 45 minutes, 100 marks and 50% of the GCSE, set at Foundation and Higher Tier.

At 105 minutes for 100 marks, each paper gives 1.05 minutes per mark, our own arithmetic on AQA's figures.

AQA lists ten required practical activities that must be carried out by all students taking GCSE Physics, and states that questions on them count for at least 15% of the overall marks. Two of the ten are labelled physics only in the specification: practical 2, on thermal insulators, and practical 9, on reflection and refraction of light. AQA also states that apparatus and technique AT 8 is physics only.

PracticalAQA required activityAQA label
1Investigation to determine the specific heat capacity of one or more materialsNot labelled physics only
2Effectiveness of different materials as thermal insulators and the factors that affect insulationPhysics only
3Circuit diagrams to set up and check circuits, investigating the factors affecting resistanceNot labelled physics only
4I-V characteristics of a variety of circuit elementsNot labelled physics only
5Measurements to determine the densities of regular and irregular solid objects and liquidsNot labelled physics only
6The relationship between force and extension for a springNot labelled physics only
7The effect of varying the force on the acceleration of an object of constant mass, and of varying the mass at constant forceNot labelled physics only
8Apparatus to measure the frequency, wavelength and speed of waves in a ripple tank and waves in a solidNot labelled physics only
9Reflection of light by different types of surface and refraction of light by different substancesPhysics only
10How the infrared radiation absorbed or radiated by a surface depends on the nature of the surfaceNot labelled physics only

AQA's specification also states that equations the pupil must apply are given on the Physics equation sheet in some cases and must be recalled in others, and marks equations needed for Higher Tier papers only with the letters HT. A tutor therefore sorts a pupil's equations into the ones to recall and the ones to select, which is work a one-to-one lesson can do on a shared whiteboard with the pupil writing each line.

Our expert GCSE Physics tutors help pupils across Watford with the two papers and ten practicals at Foundation and Higher Tier, in one-to-one online lessons built around the pupil's own school.

Which Watford-postal schools does GIAS place in Three Rivers?

GIAS gives Watford as the town for Parmiter's School and Saint Michael's Catholic High School, and gives Three Rivers as their district. They are therefore outside the Watford district cut and outside every Watford total above. They sit in the same DfE Hertfordshire table, so their separate Physics counts are shown here in a table of their own.

Parmiter's SchoolThree Rivers89206898774673902
Saint Michael's Catholic High SchoolThree Rivers3118028211163310

Parmiter's School has 89 Physics entries against a cohort of 206, with 89 at grade 4 or above, 87 at grade 6 or above and 74 at grade 7 or above. Its counts are 2 at grade 5, 13 at grade 6, 7 at grade 7, 28 at grade 8 and 39 at grade 9. Saint Michael's Catholic High School has 31 against 180, with 28 at grade 4 or above, 21 at grade 6 or above and 11 at grade 7 or above. Its counts are 3 at grade 3, 2 at grade 4, 5 at grade 5, 10 at grade 6, 5 at grade 7, 3 at grade 8 and 3 at grade 9. The 89 and 31 entry totals are not added to the Watford district's 364.

Stanborough Secondary School is the fifth school in the Watford district rows. DfE's rows for it hold 5 Physics entries from a cohort of 25 and no grade rows, so this page states those two counts and no grade figure for it.

How does one-to-one online GCSE Physics tuition use these school figures?

Tuition is one-to-one and online with a shared whiteboard. A programme begins with a short diagnostic against the pupil's own school and exam board, then works through that pupil's past papers and marks them against the real mark scheme, with session notes shared with parents after each lesson. With 2 papers, 8 topics and 10 required practicals to cover, the order follows the diagnostic, not the textbook.

Our expert tutors teach the calculation-heavy topics, such as Energy, Electricity and Forces, with worked examples that the pupil then repeats unaided, and they walk through each of the 10 required practicals as a method the pupil must be able to describe and evaluate. The school tables above show the pupil's own school and how many of its pupils sit the separate Physics GCSE, which is where a programme starts for a pupil at any of the five schools.

Sessions are one-to-one online with a shared whiteboard. 91% of our students achieve their desired grades, and the Trustpilot rating is shown at the foot of this page.

Our expert GCSE Physics tutors teach one-to-one online, working through the eight AQA topics in the order a pupil's own mock paper shows they need, for pupils at any Watford school.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GCSE Physics the same as Combined Science in Watford's DfE figures?

No. The Watford rows count GCSE (9-1) Full Course entries in Physics, the separate qualification, and the 5 Watford district schools made 364 of them in summer 2026. Combined Science (Double Award) is a different qualification with its own rows. AQA's 8463 specification labels practicals 2 and 9 of its 10 required practicals as physics only, which is where the separate course adds content.

How many GCSE Physics entries does each Watford district school have?

In summer 2026 DfE counts 166 at Watford Grammar School for Boys from a cohort of 224, 132 at Watford Grammar School for Girls from 211, 40 at Future Academies Watford from 195, 21 at Westfield Academy from 243 and 5 at Stanborough Secondary School from 25. Together that is 364 entries from 898 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4. These are entries, not pupils.

How many Watford GCSE Physics entries reached grade 4 and grade 7 in 2026?

At the four Watford district schools with grade rows, DfE records 359 Physics entries, and our own sums give 357 at grade 4 or above, 311 at grade 6 or above, 243 at grade 7 or above and 83 at grade 9. By school, grade 7 or above is 121 at Watford Grammar School for Boys, 97 at Watford Grammar School for Girls, 14 at Future Academies Watford and 11 at Westfield Academy.

Why are Parmiter's School and Saint Michael's Catholic High School not in the Watford totals?

GIAS lists the town of both schools as Watford and their district as Three Rivers, so they fall outside the Watford district cut of 5 schools. DfE's Hertfordshire table still lists them: Parmiter's School has 89 Physics entries from a cohort of 206, and Saint Michael's Catholic High School has 31 from 180. The two entry totals are shown in their own table and are not added to the Watford total of 364.

Which Stanborough school is in the Watford Physics figures?

Stanborough Secondary School, which GIAS places in the district of Watford with the postcode WD25 9JT, has 5 Physics entries from a cohort of 25. DfE's Hertfordshire table also lists Stanborough School, which GIAS places in Welwyn Hatfield, so that school is not in any Watford table on this page. For Stanborough Secondary School, the entry total of 5 and the cohort of 25 are the only counts in DfE's rows, so this page gives no grade figure for it.

Are the summer 2026 GCSE Physics figures for Watford final?

No. DfE published the key stage 4 release on 15 October 2026, updated it on 28 October 2026 and states that the data in it is provisional. Counts for a school can therefore differ in a later version. DfE also states that Progress 8 cannot be calculated for 2024/25 and 2025/26, so nothing here is a progress measure for any Watford school.

How long are the AQA GCSE Physics papers and what do they cover?

AQA 8463 has two written papers, each 1 hour 45 minutes, 100 marks and 50% of the GCSE, at Foundation and Higher Tier. Paper 1 covers topics 1 to 4, from Energy to Atomic structure. Paper 2 covers topics 5 to 8, from Forces to Space physics. That is 1.05 minutes per mark on each paper, and practical-based questions count for at least 15% of the marks.

Can GCSE Physics equations and calculations be taught well in one-to-one online lessons?

Yes. Lessons run one-to-one online with a shared whiteboard, so a pupil writes each step of a calculation while the tutor watches. AQA's 8463 specification separates equations a pupil must recall from those given on the Physics equation sheet, and marks Higher Tier only equations HT. A tutor drills the recall list first, then times practice questions at AQA's 1.05 minutes per mark.
