Croydon's A-level English tables with the Harris sixth form centre unpicked, and what each sixth form's own documents say about boards and texts.
Book a Free ConsultationCroydon's largest A-level English Literature row in DfE's 2024/25 data is not a school. Harris Federation Post 16 is a sixth form centre: its 80 matched entries and score of 0.1 are ten campuses in four boroughs added together. Five of them publish their own Literature score, and the five differ by more than chance (p = 0.003). A centre's row is an average of campuses that do not look alike, so Harris's 0.1 describes no campus inside it.
Our expert A-level English tutors help students across Croydon with the papers their own sixth form sets, whichever board it teaches. Below: the Harris row unpicked, who else is in the data, what the scores settle, and each sixth form's board, texts and entry grade.

Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppCroydon is its own local authority for this dataset, code 306: a provider belongs to the borough if the Get Information about Schools register (GIAS) records it under Croydon, wherever its students live. DfE's 2024/25 value-added data has 25 Croydon rows for A-level English Literature: 21 open schools and colleges, the Harris centre, and three providers closed since (Old Palace of John Whitgift School on 31 July 2025, Cambridge Tutors College on 30 June 2025 and The Cedars School on 1 September 2025, per GIAS). A school in Sutton is not in the table; the students of five academies in Bromley, Southwark and Merton are, through the centre.
Harris Federation Post 16 is registered at Norfolk House on Wellesley Road, and GIAS types it as a sixth form centre. Its GIAS page lists ten Harris academies as 'Sixth Form Centre School', and each academy's page lists the centre back as 'Sixth Form Centre Link': both directions hold for all ten, and Harris Academy Wimbledon is not among them. Harris says its Single Centre sixth forms bring together ten campuses under one centre number.

Source: GIAS links for URN 135416 read in both directions; DfE 2024/25 qualification and subject value-added data (version 1.0.1); DfE Compare 'Subjects entered at 16 to 18' for each campus, read 17 October 2026. Ordered by exam entries, not by score.
The arithmetic, so it can be redone. DfE's value-added entries count only entries it can match to prior attainment, while Compare counts exam entries; each figure says which it is. The centre has 80 matched entries. Its published campus rows hold 11 + 12 at two Croydon academies and 21 + 10 + 13 in Bromley and Southwark: 23 + 44 = 67, leaving 13 at the four suppressed campuses. Compare closes the sum exactly: 11 + 12 + 6 + 2 + 0 = 31 exam entries at the five Croydon campuses and 21 + 13 + 10 + 5 + 2 = 51 at the five elsewhere, and 31 + 51 = 82, the centre's own Compare total. So 62% of its exam entries, and at least 44 of its 80 matched entries (55%), are at campuses registered outside Croydon.

Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppWhich figure is Croydon's? Neither alone. The 17 published rows add up to 322 matched entries. Setting the centre aside (taking off 80) leaves 242, including 23 at two Harris academies with rows of their own; 229 are at open providers and 13 are Old Palace's last cohort. Keeping the centre and removing those two academies leaves 299, which counts the centre once but includes at least 44 entries in Bromley and Southwark and up to 13 at suppressed campuses. We call neither Croydon students, and below the centre is set aside unless named. Compare, which reconciles exactly, counts 255 exam entries at the 21 open schools and colleges.
A centre's row is the entry-weighted average of its campuses, and DfE's figures are consistent with it: the five campuses with a published Literature score entry-weight to +0.12 ((11 × 0.43 + 12 × −0.69 + 21 × −0.05 + 13 × 0.49 + 10 × 0.64) ÷ 67) and the centre publishes +0.10 on 80, the gap being the 13 entries at four suppressed campuses. So the question is whether the campuses are alike enough for the average to stand for each. In Croydon's Literature table they are not.
Two cautions that go with this table. A campus row is the students on that campus's roll, and Harris says Single Centre students may study subjects across different campuses, so a row describes a group of students, not a department. And nothing here is specific to English: DfE's all-subjects row for Harris Academy South Norwood is also below zero (−0.31 on 225 entries).
| Provider | Registered in | Value added | 95% confidence interval | Matched entries | Interval against zero |

Source: DfE 2024/25 qualification and subject value-added data (version 1.0.1), A-level English Literature, queried 17 October 2026. All five published campus rows are shown; the other five campuses are suppressed or have no row. Ordered by matched entries, not by score; not a ranking. Read with the two cautions above.
Two of the five intervals sit wholly on one side of zero, at opposite ends: Harris Academy South Norwood, −0.69 on 12 matched entries (interval −1.22 to −0.16), and Harris Girls Academy Bromley, 0.64 on 10 (0.06 to 1.22). Those two intervals do not overlap and the other three cross zero. Each describes one cohort in the year measured, and none is a measure of teaching quality.
Because every interval is published, the five can be tested together. We weighted each score by its precision (standard error is half the interval's width divided by 1.96) and calculated Cochran's Q, which compares how far apart the scores sit with what their intervals allow if all five campuses shared one result. Q is 16.04 on 4 degrees of freedom: p = 0.003, about 3 chances in 1,000, or 0.015 after allowing for the five analyses we ran on these rows. I-squared, the share of the spread that sampling noise does not explain, is 75%. This is our calculation from published rows, not a DfE statistic, for one year with 10 to 21 matched entries per campus.
What it establishes is about the measure, not any campus: a centre's published score is an average over campuses that differ by more than chance, so a family reading the centre's 0.10 has learned nothing reliable about the campus it would apply to. Harris says applications to Single Centre sixth forms go through a single application process, so the campus rows are the only place the difference shows. In Croydon only Crystal Palace and South Norwood publish a Literature row; Purley and Invictus are suppressed, and Beulah Hill has none because GIAS records it as linked only from 1 September 2024. The useful question is the campus's own: how big is the current Year 13 English group, which board does it teach and which texts does it read?

Source: DfE Compare 'Subjects entered at 16 to 18' for each provider, and DfE 2024/25 qualification and subject value-added data (version 1.0.1), both read 17 October 2026. Sorted by Literature exam entries, not by score. A dash means no entries recorded. The three closed providers have no Compare 16-to-18 data; DfE publishes a Literature row for Old Palace (13 matched entries) and suppresses those for Cambridge Tutors College and The Cedars School.
All 21 open schools and colleges entered students for A-level English Literature in 2024/25: 255 exam entries with the centre set aside. Fifteen have a published score and six do not; the six without one hold 17 entries between them: Archbishop Tenison's CofE High School (2), Harris Academy Purley (2), Harris Invictus Academy Croydon (6), Croydon Metropolitan College (1), Woodcote High School (1) and St Joseph's College (5). The counts close: 255 = 229 + 9 + 17, being 229 matched entries in the 15 published open rows, 9 exam entries at those providers that DfE did not match to prior attainment (Whitgift School 22 against 15, Oasis Academy Shirley Park 19 against 18, Coloma Convent Girls' School 11 against 10), and 17 at the six suppressed. So 93% of entries are at a provider with a published score.
Eight of Croydon's 25 Literature rows are suppressed (32%), against 23.6% of the 2,294 England rows. On 25 rows that gap is within what chance produces: the probability of eight or more is 0.22, and Croydon is only the 8th highest of the 59 local authorities with at least 15 rows. Suppression follows group size (the smallest published Literature row among England's 1,753 has 6 matched entries), and the six open suppressed rows hold 6.7% of open-provider entries, so rows without a score say little about how many students lack one, and nothing about whether a course runs.
The other two English A-levels are thin in the data. DfE's two Croydon Language rows are both suppressed (Croydon High School and Old Palace), and Compare records 3 Language entries at one open school, Croydon High School. For Language and Literature DfE publishes one of three rows: Croydon College, 19 matched entries, −0.52 (interval −0.91 to −0.14). That describes 2024/25 entries, not what schools teach now: Archbishop Tenison's and Croydon High School list English Language in 2026 documents, and Tenison's has no Language entries in Compare.

Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppValue added compares students' A-level grades with those of students nationally who started from similar GCSE results. It is DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality. Zero is the national average, and DfE treats a score as distinguishable only when its 95% confidence interval sits wholly on one side of zero. The fuller definition is on our Croydon A-level Maths page. The 17 rows overlap, because the centre contains the students in South Norwood and Crystal Palace, so they describe 15 separate groups.

Source: DfE 2024/25 qualification and subject value-added data (version 1.0.1), A-level English Literature, queried 17 October 2026. Sorted by matched entries, not by score; not a ranking. The eight suppressed rows are omitted: Archbishop Tenison's CofE High School, Harris Academy Purley, Harris Invictus Academy Croydon, Croydon Metropolitan College, Woodcote High School and St Joseph's College (open), and Cambridge Tutors College and The Cedars School (closed).
15 of the 17 intervals include zero, so DfE's rule cannot tell those groups from the national average in either direction. Two sit wholly below: Croydon College, −0.59 on 16 matched entries (interval −1.05 to −0.14), and Harris Academy South Norwood, −0.69 on 12 (−1.22 to −0.16). None sits wholly above. Each describes one cohort in the year measured. DfE's all-subjects row for both is below zero too (−0.64 on 266 entries at Croydon College, −0.31 on 225 at South Norwood), so neither English figure should be read as an English-department result.
That pattern is ordinary. Across England 12.3% of the 1,753 published Literature rows sit wholly below zero and 11.9% wholly above. At those rates a table of 17 rows shows two or more below zero about 64% of the time and none above about 12% of the time, so Croydon's table looks like a draw from England's. Taken together, the 15 open providers' rows (centre set aside, 229 matched entries) pool to −0.05 (interval −0.17 to +0.07), level with England; the spread between them is borderline against chance (p = 0.055), so we make no claim from it. These pooled figures are our calculation from published rows, not DfE statistics.

Harris Invictus Academy Croydon's May 2025 brochure and Harris Academy Purley's Key Stage 5 page list English Literature, the former with the same grade 6 wording; South Norwood's and Crystal Palace's own sixth form pages name no English board or texts. BRIT School, Croydon Metropolitan College, Trinity School and Whitgift School have no English board, texts or grade on the pages we read; Croydon Metropolitan College lists 'English' among its A-level subjects, and Trinity's and Whitgift's subjects pages list English and English Literature.
Ten of the 21 open providers name a board for English: five AQA (Archbishop Tenison's, Riddlesdown, Woodcote, Shirley High and Oasis), three Edexcel (Coombe Wood, Royal Russell and Croydon College) and two OCR (Coloma and Norbury). None names Eduqas or WJEC, and the other eleven name none, so a family there has to ask the department. Each board's papers are on our AQA, Edexcel and OCR pages.
The same board does not mean the same books. Archbishop Tenison's and Riddlesdown both teach Othello and the AQA pre-1900 poetry anthology, but Tenison's Modern times texts (Feminine Gospels, Our Country's Good, The Color Purple) share nothing with Riddlesdown's (The Handmaid's Tale, Skirrid Hill, A Streetcar Named Desire), and Woodcote's sheet follows Riddlesdown's list. Where a coursework word count is stated it is 2,500 for the Literature essay (Tenison's, Riddlesdown, Croydon High School) and 3,500 across Tenison's two Language pieces.

One caution about documents: a current document says what a school offers now and the data say who finished in 2024/25, so they can differ without either being wrong. Croydon College's group site lists only Language and Literature as its English A-level, while Compare records 16 Literature and 20 Language and Literature entries; we report the difference and do not resolve it.
The first job in any Croydon programme is establishing which qualification the student sits and which texts the department teaches, because the borough is split three ways. Where the board is AQA, Archbishop Tenison's describes Literature as two thematic papers at 40% each and a 2,500-word comparative essay at 20%, with both papers open book, so the work is on using a clean copy of the text under time pressure; Riddlesdown describes two papers and the same essay length. Where it is Edexcel, as at Royal Russell and Coombe Wood, there are three papers (Drama 30%, Prose 20%, Poetry 30%) and a 20% coursework comparison. Where it is OCR, as at Coloma and Norbury, the programme starts from OCR's specification, code H472 in Coloma's guide.
Sessions are one-to-one and online with a shared whiteboard. A tutor works a past extract or unseen text with the student, marks it against the real mark scheme for that board, and builds essay practice on the student's own set texts, not a generic list. Where DfE publishes no score for a school, the working grade and the department's own papers tell us more than a borough table can. Our Croydon Biology, Chemistry and Physics pages run the same Harris arithmetic subject by subject.
Fifteen of Croydon's 21 open schools and colleges have one for 2024/25: BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology, Coloma Convent Girls' School, Coombe Wood School, Croydon College, Croydon High School, Harris Academy South Norwood, Harris City Academy Crystal Palace, Norbury High School for Girls, Oasis Academy Shirley Park, Riddlesdown Collegiate, Royal Russell School, Shirley High School Performing Arts College, The Quest Academy, Trinity School, Whitgift School. The other six do not: Archbishop Tenison's CofE High School, Harris Academy Purley, Harris Invictus Academy Croydon, Croydon Metropolitan College, Woodcote High School and St Joseph's College, each with between 1 and 6 Literature exam entries in Compare.
DfE withholds a score when too few students were matched to prior attainment; the smallest published A-level English Literature row in England has 6 matched entries. That describes the size of the group in the year measured, not the quality of the course or whether it runs now. The six open Croydon providers with a suppressed row hold 17 of the 255 open-provider entries, so 93% of Croydon's English Literature students are at a provider with a published score.
It is registered in Croydon and holds the largest row in the borough's English Literature table, with 80 matched entries, but it is a sixth form centre and not a single school. GIAS links ten Harris academies to it in both directions, registered in Croydon, Bromley, Southwark and Merton. At least 44 of its 80 matched entries, and 62% of its 82 Compare exam entries, are at campuses registered outside Croydon.
Not reliably. A centre's row is the entry-weighted average of its campuses, and in Croydon's Literature table the five campuses with a published score differ by more than chance (Cochran's Q 16.04 on 4 degrees of freedom, p = 0.003), so the centre's 0.10 describes none of them. A campus row is also students on that campus's roll, and Harris says Single Centre students may study across campuses, so a row is not a department. Ask the campus about its own English group.
In 2024/25 Compare records English Language entries at one open Croydon school (3 at Croydon High School) and English Language and Literature at three (Croydon College 20, Woodcote High School 5, Croydon Metropolitan College 1). DfE publishes a score for one of those rows, Croydon College, −0.52 on 19 matched entries. That describes who finished in 2024/25: Archbishop Tenison's and Croydon High School list English Language in their 2026 documents, so ask the school which English A-levels run now.
It is set school by school. Five providers name AQA (Archbishop Tenison's, Riddlesdown Collegiate, Woodcote High School, Shirley High School and Oasis Academy Shirley Park), three name Edexcel (Coombe Wood School, Royal Russell School and Croydon College) and two name OCR (Coloma Convent Girls' School and Norbury High School for Girls); we found no board for the other eleven. Where a grade is stated it is 5 in English Language and Literature at Coloma, Norbury and Croydon College, 6 at Croydon High School, Royal Russell, Shirley High, The Quest Academy and in Harris Sixth Form's 2026-27 table, and 7 in either subject at Oasis.
