Harrow is a London borough and its own local authority, code 310, with seventeen sixth-form providers in the Department for Education's 2024/25 subject data and sixteen A-level Chemistry rows. Two of those rows are suppressed. One of them comes back: Harrow Collegiate publishes 189 matched entries, its nine publishing member schools account for 184, and the missing 5 belong to Whitefriars School.

Our expert A-level Chemistry tutors help students across Harrow on the specification their own sixth form enters — OCR, Edexcel or AQA — and on the practical endorsement that is recorded separately from the grade. Sessions start from the papers that student will actually sit.

Because Harrow is its own local authority, the borough boundary and the data boundary are the same thing: every provider below carries a DfE reference number beginning 310, and nothing from Barnet, Brent or Hillingdon is folded in. What follows is Chemistry only. A school's figure in this subject says nothing about its figure in any other, because value added is calculated separately for each one.

Which Harrow Providers Enter A-Level Chemistry, and at What Scale

Sixteen of the seventeen providers carry a GCE A-level Chemistry row for 2024/25. The exception is North London Collegiate School, which enters Chemistry only as International Baccalaureate Standard level and Higher level components, three and five entries respectively, and not as a GCE A level at all. That is the whole of the gap between seventeen providers and sixteen rows.

The borough's Chemistry teaching is concentrated to an unusual degree. St Dominic's Sixth Form College alone accounts for 226 of the Compare entries, more than five times the next largest single provider. Below it the distribution falls away quickly: six providers between 33 and 43 entries, then a long tail where eight sixth forms enter fourteen students or fewer.

Source: each provider's Compare school and college performance 16-to-18 subjects-entered page, 2024/25, retrieved 16 October 2026. This column counts exam entries; the value-added matched entries, which are a subset of it, are given with each provider's score further down. Sorted by Compare A-level entries, never by score. Harrow Collegiate is deliberately absent: it is a pooled row for ten of the schools above and is set out in the next section.

One row in the dataset is not a school. Harrow Collegiate is a partnership registration whose 189 matched entries are the same students already counted under ten of the school sixth forms above, so counting each entry once gives 503 for the borough rather than the 687 a reader gets by adding the published column from top to bottom. The partnership itself is set out in full on our A-level Maths page for Harrow, which works from the same DfE release in another subject. What follows here is the part that is particular to Chemistry.

The Suppressed Chemistry Row That the Collegiate's Own Arithmetic Returns

Harrow Collegiate holds URN 135469 and is registered on the Get Information about Schools service under the establishment type Sixth form centres. That register links exactly ten establishments to it, each one carrying the link type Sixth Form Centre School. Each of those ten also holds its own row in the same value-added file, and the Collegiate's figures are those ten pooled.

In most subjects that arrangement is a clean addition and nothing more. In Chemistry it is not, because one of the ten does not publish. The three columns below are the three counts DfE makes available for these schools, and they behave differently from one another.

Source: DfE qualification and subject value added dataset 019c2960 and each school's Compare 16-to-18 subjects-entered page, both 2024/25, retrieved 16 October 2026. The ten linked schools are those the Get Information about Schools register ties to URN 135469 under the link type Sixth Form Centre School.

Two of the three reconcile exactly. The ten schools' Compare A-level entries add to 196 against a published 196, and their AS entries add to 155 against a published 155. The value-added column does not: nine schools publish a matched-entry count, those nine add to 184, and the Collegiate publishes 189. The difference is 5.

That difference is not noise, and it is not a rounding artefact. Whitefriars School is the tenth linked school, and its 2024/25 Chemistry row is suppressed — the score, both interval bounds and the entry count are all published as the letter c. The Compare service, which counts entries rather than the value-added subset, lists exactly 5 A-level Chemistry entries for Whitefriars School. The residual and the published entry count are the same number, reached by two routes that do not depend on each other.

The arithmetic can be attributed to one named school here for a reason worth stating, because it does not always hold. Exactly one of the ten linked schools lacks a published count. Had two been suppressed, the shortfall would have been a combined total and no part of it could honestly be assigned to either school. One missing member is the only configuration in which a residual names a school.

What the subtraction gives is a cohort size and nothing else. It does not give Whitefriars School's value-added score, it does not give the interval around it, and neither can be inferred from the Collegiate's pooled figure. Those remain unpublished for this subject and this year, and this page does not estimate them.

Our expert A-level Chemistry tutors work with students at Harrow sixth forms and colleges across both years of the course, including at the smaller departments where a single year group is fewer than fifteen students. The programme is built on that student's own board and marked work.

Stanmore College is the borough's second suppressed Chemistry row, and it does not come back the same way. Stanmore College is a further education college in its own right and is not among the ten establishments the DfE register links to Harrow Collegiate, so there is no pooled row to subtract it from and no residual that would recover it. Its entry count is published directly on Compare instead, at one A-level Chemistry entry for 2024/25.

It is worth being precise about why this gap appears in Chemistry and not elsewhere in the borough's data. Whitefriars School publishes a value-added row in other subjects the same year: A-level Biology at -0.36, with a 95% confidence interval of -1.22 to 0.49 from 6 matched entries, and A-level Mathematics at 0.68, interval -0.04 to 1.41 from 11. Its Chemistry cohort of five is the smallest of the three and the only one of them DfE suppresses, so the Chemistry row alone drops out and the Collegiate's addition alone stops balancing.

Which Harrow A-Level Chemistry Scores Separate From Zero in 2024/25

DfE publishes a 95% confidence interval beside every value-added score, and a score is a finding only when that whole interval sits on one side of zero. Where it spans zero, the honest reading is that the data cannot separate that provider from the national average for the subject in either direction, whatever the headline number looks like. The measure already adjusts for what students arrived with, which is the reason it exists.

Source: DfE qualification and subject value added dataset 019c2960, A level cohort, GCE A level, subject Chemistry, local authority 310, 2024/25, queried 16 October 2026. Sorted by matched entries, never by score; the order carries no meaning beyond cohort size. Every published interval was checked to bracket its own published score. These are DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants and are not measures of teaching quality.

Five of the fourteen published rows have an interval lying wholly on one side of zero. They are given here in the table's own order, by cohort size, and that order carries no meaning beyond it.

Harrow School's A-level Chemistry value added for 2024/25 is 0.37, with a 95% confidence interval of 0.02 to 0.72 from 42 matched entries. Pinner High School's is -0.52, interval -0.91 to -0.14 from 34 matched entries. Park High School's is 0.74, interval 0.14 to 1.34 from 14. The John Lyon School's is 0.64, interval 0.04 to 1.24 from 14. Canons High School's is -0.97, interval -1.65 to -0.29 from 11. Each is DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants and is not a measure of teaching quality.

The two largest cohorts in the borough are not among the five. St Dominic's Sixth Form College, on 223 matched entries, returns 0.02 with an interval of -0.13 to 0.17, and Harrow Collegiate's pooled row returns -0.06 with an interval of -0.22 to 0.1. Both sit across zero. A larger cohort narrows the interval, which is why these two are the tightest in the table, but narrowing an interval does not move a score to one side of zero.

At the other end the arithmetic of small entries is unforgiving. Twelve of the fourteen published rows rest on fewer than fifty matched entries, and the six smallest sit on between eight and fourteen. An interval more than a point wide, as Canons High School's and Harrow High School's both are, is compatible with a great deal of performance in either direction, which is why a single year's subject score at a small sixth form is not a verdict on the department.

Confidence and progress

My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.

Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

Great Teaching and Focused Learning

I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.

What Changes Between Biology and Chemistry at the Same Harrow Sixth Form

A Harrow student taking both sciences at one provider is not taking two versions of the same course, and the differences are published by the schools themselves. Nower Hill High School is the clearest case. Its Biology course document for 2026-27 names OCR and the OCR A specification; its Chemistry document for the same year names Edexcel. One school, one year, two awarding bodies, and a tutor who assumes the science department uses one board throughout will be planning from the wrong specification half the time.

Our expert A-level Chemistry tutors cover OCR H432, Edexcel and AQA across Harrow and work from the student's own practical endorsement record as well as their written papers, so the required practical activities are not left to the last term.

Park High School gives its Chemistry board as OCR and its specification code as H432, the content-led Chemistry A route. Its published assessment structure is three written papers weighted 37%, 37% and 26%, and then a fourth component: 04, the Practical Endorsement in chemistry, a non-examined assessment the school describes as reported separately. Bentley Wood High School states that its exam board for key stage 5 Chemistry is AQA, that students take the linear qualification, and that the AS will not count towards the final A-level grade.

That fourth component never appears in any figure in the table above: the endorsement is a separate pass reported beside the grade rather than inside it, against an Ofqual floor of twelve practical activities set out in its subject level conditions for science. Our A-level Chemistry page for Leeds covers how the endorsement and the subject's mathematical demand work in general; what follows is what Harrow's own providers publish. Nower Hill High School's Edexcel course document states sixteen core practicals, each carried out individually, with the endorsement awarded if all criteria are met — four above Ofqual's floor of twelve. The same document says the A level is 100% examined across three papers at the end of Year 13 with no practical coursework, which is not a contradiction: the practicals are assessed for the endorsement and examined in writing, but never marked as coursework towards the grade.

The entry bar moves between the two subjects as well. St Dominic's Sixth Form College publishes a single entry-requirements table for August 2027 entry, and its Chemistry row asks English Language 5, Mathematics 7, Chemistry 7 and Science 7,7. The Biology row immediately above it asks English Language 5, Mathematics 6, Biology 7 and Science 7,6. At the borough's largest provider, the Chemistry bar is a grade higher in GCSE Mathematics and a grade higher on the second science than the Biology bar.

Ofqual requires at least 20% level 2 mathematics in A-level Chemistry against 10% in Biology, and what is particular to Harrow is that the borough's largest provider has written that difference into its own entry table. The GCSE tuition we provide in Harrow is often where that groundwork is laid.

Other providers publish a Chemistry bar of their own. Nower Hill High School asks for grade 6 or above in GCSE Chemistry with grade 5 or above in both Biology and Physics, or at least 8-7 in Combined Science. Pinner High School asks a 6 in Chemistry with a 5 in Biology and Physics, or 7-7 in Combined Science. Park High School asks a 6 in Chemistry and a 6 in Biology or Physics, or 6-6 in Combined Science, alongside a 5 in Mathematics and at least six grades 9-4 overall. A student holding 7-7 in Combined Science clears Pinner High School's published bar and Park High School's, and falls below Nower Hill High School's.

One gap is worth naming plainly. St Dominic's Sixth Form College lists Chemistry among its A levels and enters more students for it than any other provider in the borough, but no Chemistry course page was found on the pages we read: twenty-five subject pages are linked from its A-level list, including Biology and Physics, and Chemistry is named without one. No awarding body for Chemistry could be found there, and the same is true of Whitmore High School and The John Lyon School, both of which list the subject without naming a board. That is a statement about what was located on 16 October 2026, not about what those providers enter, and the department will answer it in a sentence. Our A-level Biology page for Harrow sets out the equivalent picture in the other science, and the A-level Chemistry subject page covers how each specification is structured.

How Leading Tuition Works With Harrow A-Level Chemistry Students

Everything above points at one practical problem. Inside a single London borough a Chemistry student may be sitting OCR H432, Edexcel or AQA; may face a formal AS series at the end of Year 12 or none, depending on the school; will be working towards an endorsement of at least Ofqual's twelve practical activities, and sixteen on the Edexcel course Nower Hill publishes; and will have entered on a GCSE bar running from 6-6 to 8-7 in Combined Science. A programme built on the subject in general misses most of that.

Our expert A-level Chemistry tutors teach across Harrow's sixth forms and colleges, and each programme starts from three things the student's own provider publishes: the specification, the assessment pattern, and the entry grades the department expected. From there the work is ordinary and specific. The topics the department has already taught. The practical endorsement record and the gaps in it. Past-paper technique on the papers that student will actually sit, and the extended-response and multi-step calculation marks that separate grades at the top of this subject.

91% of our students achieve their desired grades. Tuition is one-to-one, in person across Harrow or online, and a free consultation is the way to begin: a conversation about the student, their sixth form and the specification they are entered for.

Our expert A-level Chemistry tutors support students at every Harrow sixth form from St Dominic's to the ten schools inside the Collegiate, on the board that provider enters and towards the grade the student is working for.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many students sit A-level Chemistry in Harrow?

Counting each entry once, the Department for Education's 2024/25 value-added file holds 503 matched A-level Chemistry entries for the borough. Reading the same column straight down gives 687, because Harrow Collegiate's 189 entries appear both in its own pooled row and in the rows of the ten schools that made them. St Dominic's Sixth Form College accounts for 223 of the 503, and the Compare service lists 226 A-level Chemistry entries for the same college in the same year. Sixteen of Harrow's seventeen providers carry a Chemistry row.

Is Harrow Collegiate a sixth form I can apply to?

No. Harrow Collegiate holds URN 135469 and is registered on the Get Information about Schools service under the establishment type Sixth form centres, and the register links exactly ten establishments to it, each typed Sixth Form Centre School. It teaches no one under its own name, so a student applies to one of the ten schools rather than to the Collegiate. Its 2024/25 A-level Chemistry row of 189 matched entries is those ten schools pooled, which is why it cannot be read beside a single school's row.

Why does Whitefriars School have no published A-level Chemistry score?

Its 2024/25 row is suppressed: the score, both confidence interval bounds and the entry count are all published as the letter c. The entry count is still recoverable. Harrow Collegiate publishes 189 matched entries and the nine linked schools that do publish a count add to 184, leaving 5 — and the Compare service lists exactly 5 A-level Chemistry entries for Whitefriars School. The arithmetic returns the cohort size only. It does not return the school's score or its interval, and neither should be estimated from it.

Which exam board will my child sit for A-level Chemistry in Harrow?

It depends entirely on the sixth form, and three Harrow providers name three different boards. Park High School gives its board as OCR and its specification code as H432. Nower Hill High School names Edexcel in its 2026-27 Chemistry course document. Bentley Wood High School states that its exam board for key stage 5 Chemistry is AQA. For the remaining providers no awarding body for Chemistry was found on the pages we read, and the department itself will answer the question in a sentence.

What is the practical endorsement, and does it change the A-level grade?

It is a separate pass awarded alongside the A level, and it does not contribute to the grade. Ofqual requires students taking A-level biology, chemistry or physics to carry out a minimum of 12 practical activities towards it, assessed against the competency criteria in Table 1 of its subject conditions. Park High School lists it as component 04, a non-examined assessment reported separately. Nower Hill High School's Edexcel course states 16 core practicals, four above Ofqual's floor, with the endorsement awarded if all criteria are met.

What GCSE grades do Harrow sixth forms ask for in A-level Chemistry?

The published bars differ across the borough. Nower Hill High School asks for grade 6 or above in GCSE Chemistry and grade 5 or above in both Biology and Physics, or at least 8-7 in Combined Science. Pinner High School asks for a 6 in Chemistry and a 5 in Biology and Physics, or 7-7 in Combined Science. Park High School asks for a 6 in Chemistry and a 6 in Biology or Physics, or 6-6 in Combined Science, plus a 5 in Mathematics and at least six grades 9-4 overall.

Which Harrow providers' A-level Chemistry scores separate from zero?

Five of the fourteen published rows for 2024/25. Canons High School is -0.97, with a 95% confidence interval of -1.65 to -0.29 from 11 matched entries. Pinner High School is -0.52, interval -0.91 to -0.14 from 34. Harrow School is 0.37, interval 0.02 to 0.72 from 42. The John Lyon School is 0.64, interval 0.04 to 1.24 from 14. Park High School is 0.74, interval 0.14 to 1.34 from 14. These are DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants and are not measures of teaching quality.
