A Level English Tutors Harrow 2026

290 exam entries at sixteen Harrow institutions, three English subjects in DfE's tables, and two sixth forms whose scores separate in only two of fourteen subjects.

A level English in Harrow is taken as English Literature or as the combined English Language and Literature; the Department for Education (DfE) records no stand-alone English Language entry in the borough for 2024/25. Sixteen institutions made 290 exam entries, counted once: 257 in Literature and 33 in Language and Literature. Harrow's two largest sixth forms can be told apart in only two of fourteen subjects, one of them English Literature.

Our expert A level English tutors help students across Harrow with Literature and with the combined Language and Literature course, on whichever board and set texts their own sixth form has chosen. Each programme starts from the papers that student will actually sit and the essays they are already writing.

Harrow is its own local authority, code 310, so the borough and the data boundary are the same thing: every provider here carries a DfE reference beginning 310, the Get Information about Schools register (GIAS) gives each a local authority of Harrow (310), and nothing from Barnet, Brent or Hillingdon is folded in. Two measures run through the page. Exam entries count every A level entry DfE records for a provider; matched entries are the subset DfE could link to the student's GCSE results, which is what a value-added score is built from. Both come from DfE's A level and other 16 to 18 results release for 2024/25.

Which A Level English Do Harrow Students Actually Sit?

DfE's tables treat English as three A level subjects: English Literature, English Language, and English Language and Literature. Harrow has Literature rows for sixteen providers and Language and Literature rows for six. It has no English Language row in DfE's value-added table or its entries table, none on the seventeen providers' Compare pages, and no English Language entries in DfE's separate region-and-subject table, while DfE's national comparator records 12,160 for England in the same year. That describes four tables for one year. It is not a statement about what any Harrow sixth form offers; a later section sets the Collegiate's own course lists beside it.

Counted once each, Harrow's providers made 257 Literature exam entries in 2024/25. Of these, 214 were at state-funded providers: the Collegiate with 106, St Dominic's Sixth Form College with 85, Avanti House School with 22 and Stanmore College with 1. The other 43 were at three independent schools: Harrow School with 24, North London Collegiate School with 13 and The John Lyon School with 6. DfE's matched counts cover 253 of the 257, because 1 Harrow School entry and 2 at Avanti House School could not be linked to GCSE results and Stanmore College's count is withheld. Language and Literature adds 33 exam entries, all inside the Collegiate row: Nower Hill High School 16, Whitmore High School 10, Harrow High School 5, and Bentley Wood High School and Pinner High School 1 each.

The Collegiate row is shown once and its schools are listed beneath it, not added to it. "No row" means DfE lists no row for that provider and subject.

Every one of the sixteen institutions entered at least one student for A level English in 2024/25, Stanmore College and Whitefriars School with one Literature entry each and Harrow High School with five in Language and Literature and none in Literature. Heartwood House, an independent school GIAS lists in Harrow, is not among DfE's seventeen Harrow providers.

A student at any of these providers can book a free consultation with one of our expert A level English tutors and start from that school's own reading list and mock results.

Which Harrow English Literature Scores Clear Zero, and Do the Grades Agree?

Fourteen of the sixteen Literature rows carry a published score; Stanmore College and Whitefriars School, one entry each, are withheld. DfE publishes a 95% interval beside each score, and a score is a finding only when that interval lies wholly on one side of zero. Value added allows for what students arrived with, while the share graded A* to B records only what they achieved; England's share in English Literature in 2024/25 was 56.5% on 34,031 entries. These are DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants and are not measures of teaching quality.

Source: DfE, Schools and colleges - qualification and subject value added and subject entries and grades, 2024/25, GCE A level, English Literature, local authority 310, and DfE's national comparator dataset, read through the Explore Education Statistics public API on 17 October 2026. Ordered by matched entries; percentages are shares of exam entries. The Collegiate's row pools its ten schools and the eight that publish a score are listed too. Points above or below England are differences between the percentages as printed. Whitefriars School and Stanmore College have no published score in DfE's table and are left out.

Six of the fourteen intervals lie wholly above zero: the Collegiate's pooled row, Whitmore High School, Harrow School, North London Collegiate School, Rooks Heath School and Park High School. One lies wholly below, St Dominic's Sixth Form College. Seven include zero, so DfE's data cannot place those providers on either side. Counting entries once, 142 of the 253 matched entries sit at providers whose interval lies wholly above zero (the Collegiate's pooled row, Harrow School and North London Collegiate School), 85 at the one provider wholly below, and 26 at the two single providers whose intervals include zero, Avanti House School and The John Lyon School.

Inside the Collegiate's pooled row the eight schools that publish a score run from -0.44 at Bentley Wood High School to 0.75 at Park High School. Three of those intervals lie wholly above zero, none lies below, and the pooled 0.29 falls between the two ends. The three independent schools score 0.56, 0.69 and 0.61 on 23, 13 and 6 matched entries, and the first two intervals lie wholly above zero. The widest intervals belong to the smallest cohorts: Hatch End High School and The John Lyon School have 6 matched entries each, and their intervals run -0.91 to 0.59 and -0.13 to 1.36.

Grades and scores do not line up. St Dominic's Sixth Form College graded 49 of its 85 entries A* to B, 57.6%, which is 1.1 points above England's share, and its score is -0.38 with an interval of -0.58 to -0.19, wholly below zero. The Collegiate's 63.2% is 6.7 points above England's and its interval lies wholly above zero. Whitmore High School's 83.9% and Harrow School's 95.8% are 27.4 and 39.3 points above, and their intervals also lie above zero. At the other end Canons High School's 50.0% is 6.5 points under England's while its score is 0.39 with an interval of -0.14 to 0.92 that includes zero. A grade share close to the national one beside a score wholly below zero is not a contradiction: the grade share does not know where the students started.

The college's prospectus for August 2027 entry publishes its own results table for 2026. For English Literature it shows 99 entries, 22.2% graded A* to A and 57.6% graded A* to B, the same A* to B share as DfE's count for the 2024/25 cohort. DfE's score for 2026 entrants is not in the dataset this page reads, so the 2026 table is a second year of grades and nothing more.

How Far Does a Harrow Sixth Form's Overall Score Tell You About Its English?

Harrow Collegiate and St Dominic's Sixth Form College are the two largest A level providers in the borough by matched entries across all subjects, with 2,658 and 2,010 against 598 for the next, Harrow School. Fourteen subjects have a published score for both of them on at least 30 matched entries each. In twelve of the fourteen the two 95% intervals overlap, so DfE's data cannot tell the providers apart in that subject. In two they do not: English Literature and Geography.

The two all-subjects rows are apart: 0.17 (0.13 to 0.21) for the Collegiate against -0.06 (-0.11 to -0.01) for St Dominic's, a gap of 0.23. That overall gap does not carry into twelve of the fourteen subjects. In English Literature the gap is 0.67, 2.9 times the all-subjects figure, and in Geography it is 0.64.

Source: DfE, Schools and colleges - qualification and subject value added, 2024/25, GCE A level, local authority 310, read through the Explore Education Statistics public API on 17 October 2026. Included are the 14 subjects in which both providers have a published score and at least 30 matched entries; the all-subjects row is DfE's own aggregate. Ordered by the smaller cohort. "Overlap" means the two 95% intervals share at least one value.

In the four subjects our other Harrow A level pages cover, the intervals overlap: the Collegiate and St Dominic's score 0.16 and -0.06 in Maths, 0.1 and -0.14 in Biology, -0.06 and 0.02 in Chemistry, and 0.09 and 0.07 in Physics.

What this establishes is narrow. A sixth form's overall result is a poor guide to one subject: across these two providers the overall difference shows up in two subjects of fourteen. English Literature is one of the two. In it the Collegiate's interval lies wholly above zero and St Dominic's wholly below, and the two do not touch, as the table shows for each provider. The data cannot say why, and this page offers no reason. DfE's score compares students with similar GCSE results nationally, covers one year's entrants, and is not a measure of teaching. For a family weighing sixth forms the useful question is therefore about the subject and the course: which board, which papers, which texts, and how that department's own results look. Our expert A level English tutors begin every free consultation from those questions, whichever sixth form the student attends.

What Is Inside the Collegiate's English Row, and Why Can It Be Trusted?

Harrow Collegiate (URN 135469) is typed "Sixth form centres" on GIAS, so it is not a school a student joins. Its register page links exactly ten schools, each typed "Sixth Form Centre School", and each of those ten pages links back to it as a "Sixth Form Centre Link". None of the other seven Harrow institutions we read on the register links to it. Harrow Council's page for sixth-form applicants tells students to contact the school or college directly and names fourteen schools and colleges in the partnership; ten of those are the GIAS links.

In Literature the Collegiate's row is exactly the sum of its schools. Eight of the ten have published grades and add to 105 exam entries. Whitefriars School has one entry whose grade DfE withholds, and Harrow High School has no Literature row. 105 + 1 = 106, and every grade column agrees.

The eight schools are Whitmore, Pinner, Canons, Rooks Heath, Bentley Wood, Park, Nower Hill and Hatch End. The one entry in the difference column is Whitefriars School's.

Two other registers agree. Compare, DfE's school and college performance service, lists the same A level counts as the DfE tables for all seventeen providers, and its AS entries reconcile as well: the Collegiate's 59 AS Literature entries are 40 at Whitmore, 11 at Bentley Wood, 6 at Hatch End and 1 each at Rooks Heath and Whitefriars. The council's list also names a "Stanmore sixth form college". Stanmore College, the only college of that name in DfE's Harrow tables, has one A level Literature entry; adding it to the ten would make the members sum to 107 against a published 106, so the English figures reconcile to the ten GIAS schools and not to the fourteen. Whitefriars School and Stanmore College have one entry each, so the A level total alone cannot say which of the two sits inside the 106; the AS count settles it, because the 59 needs Whitefriars School's one AS entry and Stanmore College has no AS Literature row.

Which Exam Board and Which Papers Will a Harrow English Student Face?

We read each institution's own pages and documents on 17 October 2026 and located an English board for six of the sixteen: St Dominic's Sixth Form College, Pinner High School, Hatch End High School, Park High School, Rooks Heath School and Nower Hill High School. That records what we found and not what the other ten enter, and a department will answer in a sentence. The board fixes what a student may take into the examination room, and the rules below come from the specifications of AQA English Literature B (7717), OCR English Literature (H472) and OCR English Language and Literature (H474), not from the schools.

Where a school's document does not name the specification code, the code shown is the one whose structure the school describes and the table says so.

So a Harrow student's answer to "can I take my text in?" is one paper out of two at AQA, neither of two at OCR's Literature, and one component out of three at OCR's Language and Literature. Within the Collegiate's pooled row, three of the five schools whose board we found name OCR and two name AQA, so the row mixes boards and a tutor who assumes one board for the partnership will start some students on the wrong specification. The assessment objectives also carry different weight by board, as the table shows. AO2, the analysis of how meanings are shaped, is the largest at both OCR specifications, and AO4 and AO5 carry 12% to 13% at all three.

Entry bars are published separately from the board. For A level English Literature, St Dominic's, Park High and Whitmore ask 5; Nower Hill asks a 5 with at least one 6; Pinner asks 6 in Literature and 5 in Language; Hatch End, Rooks Heath, Canons and Bentley Wood ask 6 in both; and The John Lyon School asks 7 in Literature and 6 in Language. For the other six institutions, Avanti House School, Harrow School, North London Collegiate School, Stanmore College, Whitefriars School and Harrow High School, we found no English-specific bar on the pages we read; Harrow High School's page asks for 6 or higher in a subject already studied at GCSE, without naming English. The A-level English subject page and the AQA and OCR Literature pages set out how each specification is built in general.

Is There an A Level English Language Course in Harrow, and What Is the Combined One?

DfE's four tables hold no A level English Language entry for Harrow in 2024/25, while England has 12,160. The Collegiate's own course lists add a more careful picture. Two are published on its schools' websites. The first is a file on Pinner High School's site headed "Harrow Sixth Form Collegiate Course List 2025-2026", created on 6 August 2025, which marks "English Language" against four schools. The second is a "Collegiate Brochure" file on Rooks Heath School's site, created on 13 November 2025, which marks "English Language & Literature" against the same four. Neither document says whether the course or only its label changed, and neither has a column for Canons High School.

DfE records Language and Literature entries at three of those four schools, Nower Hill (16), Whitmore (10) and Harrow High (5), and none at Hatch End, which is on both lists. It also records one entry each at Bentley Wood and Pinner, which neither list names. A list says what a school may run and the tables say what it entered in 2024/25, so the two need not agree, and this page cannot say how a school's course title maps onto DfE's three English headings. Hatch End High School's course sheet gives a reason to ask: courses that do not recruit to a satisfactory level "may be offered at another centre or withdrawn".

The combined course reconciles like Literature. The Collegiate's 33 entries are 16 at Nower Hill, 10 at Whitmore, 5 at Harrow High and 1 each at Bentley Wood and Pinner; the first two schools publish scores on 26 matched entries and the other 7 entries belong to three schools whose own scores DfE withholds. Of the 33, 21 were graded A* to B, 63.6%, against 48.4% of England's 6,515 Language and Literature entries, and the Collegiate's score of 0.21 has an interval of -0.08 to 0.51 that includes zero. Where a combined-course document names its board, the board is OCR: Nower Hill High School's is headed "English Language and Literature A Level - OCR", and OCR's specification H474 has four components, non-fiction and spoken texts (closed text, one hour, 16%), the language of poetry and plays (closed text, two hours, 32%), reading as a writer and writing as a reader (open text, two hours, 32%) and a non-exam component of 20%. Our A-level English Language page covers the language side of the subject in general.

A student who wants the language side of English at a Harrow sixth form should therefore ask which of the three courses it runs, on which board, and whether the course is on the timetable for the year of entry. DfE's data shows the subject exists, with 12,160 English Language entries across England; Harrow's tables carry none for 2024/25.

How Do Our A Level English Tutors Work With Harrow Students?

A Harrow student on A level English may be sitting AQA Literature B, OCR Literature or OCR Language and Literature, with one paper open book, none, or one component of three, and with coursework that is two analytical essays or an essay paired with original writing. A programme built on A level English in general misses most of that.

Our expert A level English tutors teach across Harrow's sixth forms and colleges, and each programme starts from three things that student's own provider fixes: the specification and its exam-room rules, the set texts and the coursework brief, and the essays and mock results already marked. From there the work is ordinary and specific: the Literature essay built on the assessment objectives that board weights most, the unseen passage at AQA Paper 2 and OCR's close reading, and for the combined course the commentary that sits beside creative writing. 91% of our students achieve their desired grades. How many students sit A level English in Harrow?

Counting each entry once, Harrow providers made 290 A level English exam entries in 2024/25: 257 in English Literature and 33 in English Language and Literature, according to the Department for Education. The Collegiate's own row of 106 Literature entries is the ten schools inside it pooled, so it is counted once and its members are not added again. St Dominic's Sixth Form College made 85 Literature entries, Harrow School 24, Avanti House School 22, North London Collegiate School 13 and The John Lyon School 6.

Can a Harrow student take A level English Language, or only Literature?

DfE's 2024/25 tables record no stand-alone A level English Language entry at any of Harrow's seventeen providers, against 12,160 across England. They do record 33 entries in the combined English Language and Literature course, all at schools inside Harrow Collegiate. The Collegiate's August 2025 course list marks English Language against Harrow High, Hatch End, Nower Hill and Whitmore, and a later list marks English Language and Literature against the same four. Ask the sixth form which of the three courses it runs.

Does a Harrow sixth form's overall score tell me how its English will go?

Not much. Harrow Collegiate and St Dominic's Sixth Form College are the borough's two largest providers, and in the 14 subjects where each has at least 30 matched entries their 95% intervals overlap in 12, so DfE's data cannot tell them apart there. They do not overlap in English Literature, where the scores are 0.29 and -0.38, or in Geography. DfE's score is a progress measure for one year's entrants and is not a measure of teaching quality.

Is Harrow Collegiate a sixth form I can apply to?

No. GIAS lists Harrow Collegiate (URN 135469) as a sixth form centre and links ten schools to it, each typed Sixth Form Centre School, and each of the ten links back. Its 106 Literature entries are those schools' entries pooled: eight schools with published grades add to 105, and Whitefriars School contributes one. Harrow Council tells applicants to contact the school or college directly, so a student applies to one of the schools.

Which exam board will my child sit for A level English at a Harrow sixth form?

It depends on the school. We located a board for six of the sixteen institutions on 17 October 2026. St Dominic's, Pinner and Hatch End use AQA, with the papers of Literature B; Park High and Rooks Heath name OCR, and Nower Hill follows OCR for both Literature and Language and Literature. AQA's Paper 1 is closed book and its Paper 2 open book, while both OCR Literature exams are closed text. That records what we found, not what the other ten enter.

What GCSE grades do Harrow sixth forms ask for in English Literature?

The published bars run from 5 in both English GCSEs, at St Dominic's Sixth Form College and Park High School, to 7 in Literature and 6 in Language at The John Lyon School. Pinner High School asks 6 in Literature and 5 in Language; Hatch End, Rooks Heath, Canons and Bentley Wood ask 6 in both; Nower Hill asks a 5 with at least one 6. Whitmore asks 5 in Literature, or in either subject for Language and Literature.

How many Harrow English Literature scores are above zero in 2024/25?

Six of the 14 published Literature scores have an interval wholly above zero: Harrow Collegiate (0.29), Whitmore (0.37), Harrow School (0.56), North London Collegiate School (0.69), Rooks Heath (0.63) and Park High (0.75). One, St Dominic's Sixth Form College at -0.38, lies wholly below zero, and seven include zero. Counting students once, 142 of 253 matched entries sit at providers wholly above zero, 85 at the one wholly below and 26 at those whose intervals include zero.
